bulletThe staff/instructors are very arrogant.
bulletThe main slope could do with some urgent repair work as there are many bald patches.
bulletThe T-Bar seems to be stopped more than it runs!!

Improvements

bulletRe-surfacing the main slope has to be an utmost priority for Sheffield Ski Village.   Although this would be expensive, it should not be a problem to the UK's largest Dry Ski Slope Venue.
bulletMore lifts should be installed so beginners have the space, time and room to practice on the lifts before getting on the T-Bar and stopping it for everyone else.

Comments About Sheffield Ski Village

Steve Clark - 04/01/2001 I read your comments about Sheffield Ski Village and I couldn't agree more.  I've been going up there for nine years and the main T-Bar has always been a pain in the arse.   Still it's a damn shame about the f**king miserable staff.
John Meeson - 24/10/2001 Hello fellow Skiers.  Just a quick note about the unfriendly staff at Sheffield Ski Village.  Myself and my family have just started ski-ing lessons at Sheffield and the instructors were very rude and unhelpful.  We now go ski-ing at Swadlincote.  Ok it's not a glamorous as Sheffield, but the staff are a lot better.
Penny Brook - 21/01/2002 I was using your site to find a suitable place to take my children prior to a ski-ing holiday, and I would just like to add my comments about Sheffield Ski Village.  How unpleasant they are!!  The woman on the phone was just so un-helpful.  She's put me off taking the family there.  Instead we are going to Ski Rossendale where we have heard great reports of the children's teachers.  Thank you for your site, it's been very helpful.
Pauline Stainsby - 24/01/2002 Last April a group of 15 of us went ski-ing at Sheffield.  We had lesson with a Mr R Cousins.  Anyway, at the end of the lesson, I had a broken humorous bone in my arm and the instructor had lost his rag with two of the young boys in the group and shouted at them!!  I don't think we will be going here again.
Sue Carey - 18/02/2002 I too would like to add to your comments on Sheffield Ski Village, in particular, the un-helpful staff.  I accessed the Sheffield Ski Village Website, and used their "Useful" on-line booking facility, to book a couple of lessons.  The site promises a reply within 24 hours.  I have received no reply or telephone call.   I therefore telephoned them myself to confirm that they had received my booking, to be told that "they generally do reply to e-mails once they have trawled through them", and they normally contact by telephone, not e-mail!!  Also, when the member of staff was asking what standard I was at, she was so curt, un-helpful and totally dis-interested in ensuring the correct class was booked for me!!  This was my first contact with Sheffield Ski Village, and I am not at all impressed with the attitude demonstrated by staff.  It's a poor show, and does nothing to attract, or keep, customers.
Andy Willcock - 01/03/2002 We have skied at Sheffield Ski Village many times, and each time we have come away wondering why we bothered.  The main T-Bar lift stops more often than it runs due to people falling off.  I don't blame the fallers, they have to start somewhere, I believe that Sheffield Ski Village could put another lift in so that beginners can get used to the lifts, without the pressure of a huge queue behind them watching them fall.   Also the staff are very, very up themselves.  It seems like they really don't want you to be there and even the most simple request seems to fall on deaf ears.   Safety too is a bit lacking.  Last time we went, I got given a pair of ski's which had faulty brakes.  When I asked for another pair, they started slamming about and huffing and puffing.  I got my new pair of ski's, which worked OK, but I saw the ski technician give out the faulty ski's to someone else two minutes later!!  An loose, un-braked ski can pick up an awful lot of speed down the slope and do some serious injury to someone stood innocently at the bottom.
Andy Willcock - 23/8/2002 After a recent discussion in the rec.skiing.snowboard newsgroup, where there was a dispute as to how crap Sheffield Ski Village is, I decided to give them another go.   We paid for a whole two hours, but after getting crap equipment with bases that resembled a comb, we had two runs down the main slope and called it a day.  Nice to see they have put another lift in for the new funpark.  About Time!!  The staff are still miserable and the place is well over priced.  The SnowFlex on the new fun park is also not laid very well (either that or there is something else wrong with it!!).   When you listen to the sound of people ski-ing over it, you can hear the staples catching the base of the ski or board!!!
Marky Boy - 01/11/2002 Who Do The Staff At Sheffield Think They Are!!!!!!! Is being an arrogant f***er part of the job description??  Are they on a mission to to piss off all of the skiers and boarders in the UK??  Well, they truly pissed me off and I am never going again.   In fact, if I was you, I wouldn't even send your Mother-In-Law there!!!  I recommend Halifax to anyone.  Ok, the gear at Halifax is not brilliant, but the staff are really helpful and the SnowFlex is spot on.  Rossendale is a really friendly place too, but they could do with a bit more SnowFlex.
J Taylor - 04/03/2003 I don't know if these guys have been to Sheffield in the last year, but the SnowFlex is now second to none.  Yes the staff are arrogant and moody, but it doesn't bother me.  The funpark is ace, but the main slope needs renewing.
Davee Shaw - 23/04/2003 Please can I put a few matters straight.  I have been going here for 3 years, originally taking lessons (which were good) and since a regular (but not good) user of the fun park.  I don't know how anyone who spends time there can call the staff arrogant!!  Everyone knows they spend more time riding around than doing work!!   This valuable time spend tossing it off means that they are all better than most, but it is not rubbed off in my face.  I am not saying that this place is perfect, but to those who cant get to the white stuff so often, its the next best thing.  So to the likes of Andy and Mark, if you don't like the place, GO AWAY!!!
Robert Smith - 26/04/2003

I think your Website is a bit lame.  I have skied all the slopes in and around Britain, and found Sheffield to be one of the best for slopes and amenities.  Yes, the boot room staff can be a bit rude at times.  As for the slope itself, every slope I have been to has bare patches, its just part of dry slope ski-ing.  I think the part about hearing the staples hitting your bases is twaddle.  I have used my own equipment for a full season on here and its fine.  I think if you struggle to cope with the terrain at Sheffield its easier to whine about it.

Andy Willcock - 26/04/2003 Replying to "Robert Smith"!!  Next time you try and sent a fake e-mail, get a hotmail account!!  I rang Sheffield Ski Village today and asked to speak to a Mr Lee Knowles.  I was told you weren't around!!  So you work for Sheffield and was trying to get some good press for the place.  Excellent marketing plan!!  Just because most dry slopes have bald patches does that make it right??   How would you feel if every hire car on the roads had bald tyres??  Would you just accept it or try and get some thing done about it??  Its time us skiers campaigned for more investment into Dry Ski Slopes so bald patches are a thing of the past.  Further more, I know a lot about ski and board technology and believe me, if you did use your board for a full season, then it would be useless.  Modern ski's and boards have bases that wear out on soft pisted snow.  They don't last 2 minutes on hard dry plastic bristles!!!  I bet your edges are as blunt as a pencil that has been used daily but not sharpened for many years!!!  Finally, sorry to drag on, but turn your spell checker on!!  A 5 year old can spell better than you!!  Not surprised you got a job at Sheffield then!!!...LOL!!!!
Ian Aldred - 05/06/2003 The main slope is very bald in a lot of places and needs totally renewing!!  They do not begin to water the slope in advance of the opening time to be properly skiable for the first hour or so.  They desperately need an additional couple of teaching tows so that the learners can progress to the main slope tows.  As a parent of children in the ski school, it would be nice to have access to the top of the First Encounter (as existed 10 years ago) without having to side step up the link slope.
Everythings Pants - 05/10/2003 I ski regularly at Sheffield, and am a member of the race team there.  Yes, the matting is bad and needs replacing, but some of these comments are over the top.  The staff are OK, some of them great.  There are lots of things that need to be done here.  Though if you are going to diss it, go more often.  (!?!?!? - Ed.)
Daniel Madden - 09/10/2003 I am with Marky Boy on this one.  They really pissed me off too because when I went, they tried to make me take a lesson to prove I was good enough to go on the slope!!!  I think this is really arrogant, and after finishing the lesson, they tried to make me pay for it, even though I didn't need or want the lesson in the first place!!  After writing to complain, all I got was a crappy letter offering me a free lesson!!  After this I have refused to ever go there again!!  Another lost customer!!  I would recommend Halifax or Rossendale anytime.
Chris Issac And Family - 15/12/2003 After reading this page earlier in the year, I decided against going to Sheffield prior to our ski trip this winter.  But, as time dragged on, and Castleford looked a bit expensive, we ended up going.  I consciously noted the attitude of all members of staff and found them to be OK.  From the phone call to the end of the series of lessons, the staff were always helpful.  The instructors, namely Jonathon, Adrian and Paul (although I did hear that Paul could be a bit of an arse at times!!) were very good, and taught myself, my wife and youngest child (11) to ski.  The equipment, lifts and slope were adequate for what we needed, but I cant comment on these for the more experienced skier.  I will return to Sheffield, and recommend it to others.
Shyam Bhurton - 13/01/2004 Well, after reading these comments, I don't think I will be going to Sheffield in a hurry!!  I did think of some ski lessons before I go abroad, but I don't think I'll bother now.  So I am afraid I will have to give Sheffield a miss.
Barry O'Neill - 21/01/2004 I'm a boarder riding dry slopes every week and at Tamworth every so often.  I went to Sheffield yesterday, without my board as I was coming from Birmingham to watch the football and I didn't want to leave my board on display in my car!!!  Anyway, after declaring that I did meet their minimum standard for slope use, I was told that since I had not learned at Sheffield, and I needed to hire a board, I MUST have a 30 minute lesson which I would have to pay for (£10.00).  If I had bought my board I would have been fine, so it was nothing to do with safety, but just to use their crappy boards!!  Just to rub salt into the wound, I found out that this doesn't happen for Ski Hire!!!  Work that one out!!  In future, I'll keep my hard earned money and spend it at my local slope (Ackers Trust) or Tamworth.
