Nevis Range is the newest of the five
Scottish Ski Area's and has the highest run at 4,006 ft. At the top of Aonach Mor
you can see the spectacular sight of Ben Nevis, Britain's largest mountain at 4,406
ft. Nevis Range's unique 6 man Gondola, takes you on a 2.3 Km ride from the car park
at 900 ft, to the Snow Goose Restaurant at 2,150 ft. From here there are many lifts
to get you on the slopes including the High Speed Quad Chair. Excellent ski-ing is
available for the experts, on and off Piste, with the opening up of Corrie Dubh and the
installation of a new Braveheart Chairlift. Beginners and Intermediates are well
catered for too with some nice long easy runs to help you make your first steps. |

Nevis is my favourite of all the 5 Scottish Ski Area's. Much of the
ski-ing is more open than the other area's with fewer of those snow fences. I have
not been there since they put a lift on the Back Bowl (Braveheart Chair) but I have skied
it. The bowl is the nearest to an Alpine Back Bowl in Britain. You can enter
at either edge or drop of a cornice in the middle!! The top section is really steep.
The first time I went there, it had been snowing for days, and the sun came out as
I arrived, and I made the first tracks down!! Brilliant!! There is a big warm
building at the base of the slopes (Top of the Gondola) which serves tolerable food.
The views though are great. On a clear day you can see all the way to the
Isle Of Skye!! Mind you, Scottish Ski-ing is usually done on
"boiler-plate" scoured by the wind and scattered with rocks. I was once on
an intermediate slope on Cairngorm, with skis pointing straight down the hill, and I had
to use my poles to move forward because the wind was so strong!!! A friend of mine
was completely blown over!! |
