Other Attractions

bulletIf the kids are young and don't fancy ski-ing, you can leave them in Charlie Fastrax (Indoor Kiddies Play Area).
bulletThey also have Indoor Golf!!

Good Points

bulletIt's only 10 miles from my house!!
bulletExcellent Surface on the Main Slope.

Bad Points

bulletIf you don't like ramps and moguls, you WILL get bored of the slope after only a few runs.
bulletThe main lift always trips out.  The reason being, the buttons on the lift don't retract quick enough and the trip wire used to stop the lift would fall out if a small fly landed on the trip wire!!
bulletAlso, anything more than a slight breeze and they shut the main lift making you use the old crappy lift!!
bulletDon't even think of using your own equipment.  There is something on the slope that is causing massive base damage to ski's and boards.  Until it is found, please use their equipment!!  But, because everyone is using the slopes equipment, the boards and ski's are getting really screwed up now!!  Some of them have little or no base on at all!!

Improvements

bulletI know its too late now, but they could have made the Main Slope a bit longer and wider so you can miss the humps and bumps with ease.
bulletThey also really quickly need to find what is causing the damage to ski's and boards.   People are going to get cheesed off with this.
bulletThe biggest improvement that can be made, is the X-Scape at Castleford being built!!   That means I wont need to go to this slope again.

Comments About Halifax Ski & Snowboard Centre

Andy Willcock - 01/03/2002 As this is my local slope I am probably biased, but I like it, or should I say, I USED to like it.  Some of the older staff who work there, mentioning no names, (He knows who he is!!), can be a bit stuck up, but the younger staff are ace.  It's a shame really.  If you were made welcome being there, it would make the fact that the slope is short and littered with silly obstacles not as bad.  The main slope is good, but if you don't like the moguls and ramps, can get a bit boring. Its made of SnowFlex and is really nice to ski on, and fall on too!!!!
James McNaughton - 02/10/2002 Friendly slope with a good Snowboarding scene.  Beautiful landing off the kicker.   Unlike Sheffield, clichéness amongst the Snowboarding elite at this slope does not exist
Name Supplied - 5/12/2002 I work at Halifax Ski Slope and I can confirm that one person can be a real git at times.  If he likes you, you can do no wrong, but if he doesn't like you, then nothing you ever do is right.  I know he has pissed off a lot of people in his time, and that is probably why the ski-ing side of things is fairly quiet, whereas the snowboarders nearly always out number the skiers.  It could be a good place if someone took control of the ski-ing side as well as Gary has done with the snowboarding side.
Chris Speight - 27/01/2003 OK, so it's no Sheffield, but Halifax is OK.  I live 2 minutes from the place and I can well recommend it.  I know the bloke you mention above and he is a little bit serious and stuck up, but I think he misses his youth, he must be nearly 60!!   The other staff are good though and seem to know what they are talking about.
Name Supplied - 31/01/2003 I saw the "Old Bloke" smile today!!!  I couldn't believe it!!
Philip Roylance - 03/03/2003 After only been snowboarding for a week on holiday, we decided to pay the membership fee as the hourly rate is very expensive.  After shelling out £1000 between four of us, we were very put off by one of the older members of staff's attitude.   What a shame after Gary had been so friendly.  The board damage could be due to there being no bristles on the Dendix up the main lift!!!  I have only been using my board for a week and the base is ruined!!!
Peter Lloyd - 06/03/2003 The system for paying at Halifax is outrageous.  You pay for 2 hours (say), then come off when you are finished (which may be after 3 hours).  The next time you go they then tell you that you owe them loads of money!!!  Surely a system of paying as you come off the slope, like that used in snooker halls, would save any arguments and prevent people like me racking up huge debt, and then going to Sheffield to avoid paying up!!!
Chris Parker - 20/03/2003 I rode at Halifax for the first time last week.  Having ridden many dry ski slopes, i found Halifax to be one of the best, although one of the smallest.   The deign of the ramps, especially the big one, is excellent, and un-like Sheffield Ski Village, has plenty of run in and landing area.  Sheffield Ski Village have tried to fit too many things into one area, and ended up making a bleeding mess of it!!   The staff at Halifax were friendly too (Gary) and couldn't do enough to help.   For an outside like me, he made me feel right at home.  My only small complaint was the lack of water sprays working on the slope.  I look forward to another visit.
Dean Heathcote - 03/07/2003 One small criticism.  A mate of mine recently broke his wrist whilst on the slope, and they had no idea how to help him.  I cant say I have noticed much base damage, but they have replaced a lot of the worst Dendix in the last few months.   The swipe card system is a nice idea, but not the most efficient.  The best thing is how friendly the other riders are.  Kids on Snow Blades tend to be the worst as they usually ignore queues for the lift.  Fresh News.  If they can get planning permission, Gary says they are building a new Half Pipe Slope!!!
Name Supplied - 21/7/2003 I also work at Halifax Ski Centre, and know who everyone thinks is an "old git".  He's OK when your on the right side of him, but he can be very mean if your not.  Here's a few tips.......  If you see him coming, keep your head down and don't say a word.  It will make life a lot easier.  A lot of people have mentioned how helpful Gary is, a complete contrast to the other bloke!!!
Emil Taylor - 11/09/2003 This slope has the best kicker and quarter pipe in the country, and its generally better than snow because it needs no grooming (!!!!!!! - Ed).  If you want long scenic runs, go to France, if you want freestyle, got to Halifax.  (Thought that would be obvious!!! - Ed)
Name Supplied - 29/09/2003 Well its happened again!!!  Yet another broken limb from people using this slope!!  I have seen numerous broken wrists, arms, etc whilst working here.  OK, the broken arm that happened at the weekend, was from an experienced rider, but these kickers are stupidly big.  You get people going over them that haven't a clue and end up hurting themselves.  The Quarter Pipe has also seen its fair share of injuries.  Its due to the way its designed.  The top side is OK, but the end just, well, stops dead!!!  Many people have been riding the edge, missed the end of the Pipe, and come straight off the end to land flat on their back on hard ground, not SnowFlex!!!!  I'll keep you posted of any more injuries!!!
Daniel Madden - 09/10/2003 I have been a regular here for many years, and with plenty of experience of other dry ski slopes, I can say that this is the best.  The Kicker is brilliant, although Rossendale's new one comes a very close second!!  There is plans afoot to make a new Half Pipe, and modify the existing slope to make certain features easier to hit.
Andrew Blackley - 21/10/2003 (Copied this directly from the e-mail - May not make sense till you get to the end, but very true!!)

Naseem Hamed!!  Both Halifax Dry Ski Slope and Naseem Hamed are the same!!  They both have so much potential, they both have so much to offer, but instead of going through the finishing line, they stop right on it!!  My point is that Halifax Ski Centre really, and I mean really, pisses me off.  And why??  I'll tell you why...  You cant use the slope from April to September as its too dry, The main lift ALWAYS breaks down, The slope ices over at the first sign of frost, There's a green fungus all over the slope at  the moment.  I could go on all night about the wind and the great staff....  My point about Naseem Hamed.......  You've got X-Scape just down the road and look what Barrera did to Hamed!!  He showed him how to box!!  Take a trip to X-Scape and see how a proper slope should be run!!!!

Name Supplied - 26/10/2003 I have been riding here for a year, and so far the big lift is always broken down and I am on my second board!!!  Just had another big slice taken out of the bottom of this new board!!  The staff are great but the guy who owns it really needs to get a grip!!  We've paid for a years membership and we are not getting what we have paid for.  Someone's going to get hurt on those screws, or whatever it is damaging the bases.  Ski's and boards can be replaced, but scars cant!!
